Those who know me well know that living a healthy and clean lifestyle is something that’s extremely important to me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also realized how important it is to keep my skin happy and healthy too. It’s not just about what you put into your body–it’s also about what you put on it. When it comes to skincare–especially on my face–nailing down a daily regime that really works day in and day out took years. After a lot of trial and error, I’m excited to share some tricks with you today that have helped me to keep my skin happy and healthy.
1) LOVE YOUR LEAFY GREENS: I’m a big proponent of eating tons of fruits and veggies all the time and when it comes to making your skin glow from the inside out, I highly recommend adding more leafy greens into your diet. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was seven and since I can remember, I’ve always loved making salads. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that these salads are not only healthy and delicious, they’re also great for my skin. If your skin is feeling tired, try amping up your intake of greens for the next week or two–especially with spinach! This can help your skin start to glow from the inside out. If you don’t love eating greens, try adding pressed green juices into your diet! The cleaner you eat (and drink!), the better your skin will look and feel.
2) GLOW JUICE: I love buying young coconuts from Whole Foods, cutting them open and drinking their coconut water. Not only do I pretend I’m on a tropical vacation every time but coconut water is also amazing for hydrating your skin (and it’s especially great for your body after a tough workout). I also love aloe vera juice, which works wonders too. Whenever you can’t get your hands on these, remember to drink as much water as possible. Skin glows from the inside out when you’re hydrated so it comes as no surprise that the more water you drink, the better.
3) DON’T DISCOUNT DRUGSTORE BRANDS: My skincare regime is very simple, inexpensive and it’s easy to shop for at your local drugstore. I use Cetaphil products which my dermatologist recommended to me because they’re so gentle (I have sensitive skin) and they’re cost-effective too! I use Cetaphil’s gentle cleanser, cleansing cloths and moisturizing cream. Cetaphil’s moisturizing cream is especially great when my skin is super dry. It’s the most hydrating cream I own and it comes at such a great price point (and seems to last forever!).
Every morning after washing my face, I use Cerave Sunscreen lotion with SPF 30. This sunscreen is nice and light and I love that it protects my skin from the sun. Many friends of mine spend hundreds a month on the top creams and face washes available (and power to them!) but this affordable regime has worked best for me and I can’t recommend it enough.
4) J-LO’S SECRET LOTION POTION: When I think of beautiful, ageless, glowing skin, I think of Jennifer Lopez. Let’s face it: the woman is stunning–and so is her skin. Sure, she can afford to splurge on the best skincare in the world but I also loved reading a while back that J-Lo actually uses an affordable day cream by Dr. Hauschka to keep her skin hydrated and glowing. Like many other women, once I read this and heard the same tip from a few friends, I decided to try this rose cream myself. The results were fantastic. I’ve been using this cream every morning for the past few months–beneath my Cerave sunscreen and the combination of the two works wonders. Dr. Hauschka’s cream is light and makes my skin feel soft and buttery. You can pick it up at your local Whole Foods–if it hasn’t already flown off of the shelves. It really does work wonders.
